A Smock Tower Windmill formerly stood on the site of the later steam mill. In 1807 William Disney was the miller. In June 1807 the
mill and house was advertised for sale by auction. It was described as " A Capital and well situated SMOCK TOWER WIND-MILL in good repair with machine for keeping her into the wind, stones (two pairs) and going gears complete, also a brick dwelling house
and about half an acre of land more or less." The Premises are all freehold and possession may be had immediately...(Norfolk Chronicle 27th June 1807)
For a number of years the Smith family were millwrights and in February 1860 the cap was blown off in a gale.

Mr Edwin Clark in pony and trap, miller at Ellingham Steam Mill. Edwin Clark's memorial stone is in the Methodist Chapel wall. 1904 -1912. Mrs Alice Clark took over. There was also a bakehouse on site. (Alma Harvey)
