Stella was very ill as a young child, with all the childhood illnesses culmination in TB. She was sent away to a sanitorium. She missed a lot of schooling and in addition had to look after her siblings a lot of the time. She enjoyed The Girls' Friendly Society meetings at the rectory outbuildings on Saturday afternoons, led by Miss Palmer, they played by the river and at the blockhouse (gun emplacement) Miss Valentine was the much loved infants teacher and lived at Butterfly Corner. Stella married Norman Canham when she was 20. Her sisters, Brenda and Yvonne and friend Margaret Pipe were bridesmaids and Mr John Canham was best man. The Rev Gentry officiated. Stella worked at various jobs; on the fields, at the print works in Beccles and one time as an usherette at Broadway/Mayfair Bungay, where she sold the first Eldorado choc ices for 4d.
Wedding of Stella Mickleburgh to Norman Canham 1948. The young lad was Stella's brother Hedley. He was always interested in engineering and remembers watching the Airy houses opposite being converted to the bungalows. He said the copper wires holding the buildings together failed. He went on to found HRM Wallstar Oil Boilers.
