Ellingham Primary School

Ellingham VC Primary School (Carol Jacobs)

Ellingham School was built in 1865. A plaque in the wall of the school house shows this. The opening of the School  pre dates the Education Act of 1870 making school attendance compulsory to the ages of 5-10. It was founded by The National Society for the Education of the Poor in the Principles of the Established Church. The school site was given by Mr Henry Smith of Ellingham Hall and he together with members of his family and personal friends contributed over £400 towards the cost of erecting the school room and teacher's house. After 1870 grants were dependent on pupil's attainment and attendance. (from the book: The Story of Ellingham School 1865-1965 by Headmaster Mr Tipler)

Ellingham School bell, still in situ and now featuring on the village sign. It was the custom for the school bell to be rung each school day at precisely 8.50am and again at 9am, the peals being used to correct the clocks in the district. It is inscribed "Presented to Ellingham School by Mrs Arundel 1865.

The classroom was financed by parishioners and friends of the school to commemorate Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee. As the school role increased due to the efforts of Mr Henry Smith of Ellingham Hall, Her Majesty's Inspectors reported the need for a classroom for the separate instruction of the youngest children. It was decided to set up a building fund. Parishioners subscribed £65, the Diocesan Board of Education promised £15 and the National Society £12. Mr Brown, a local builder was contracted to build the Diamond Jubilee Classroom for the sum of £115. The building was formally opened  and dedicated by the Bishop of Thetford January 25th 1901.
