Clubs and Groups

Jack Adams was founder member of the Football Club with Tony Jacobs. (Tony was a policeman who died quite young). Jack worked at Ellingham Mill all his life, beginning at aged14.

Further information from Sarah Hanlan:

"It was established in 1960. They are in the Lowestoft League and in 2015 got promoted to division 2. At that time 23 young men were signed up, some of whom have played for 14 years. The Club's sponsors have included MC Griffin pluming, Alan Cook, Flixton Buck, Fisherman,The Wherry Inn, Swan Motel and have received donations from Kirby Cane and Ellingham Charities to help with repair, pluming, electrics, rabbit fencing and security. Fund raising events are held to raise money to pay for renting the pitch from the church, supplying medical equipment, footballs, repairs, maintenance of the pitch and club house."

Sadly at the time of writing 2020 the club has disbanded due to lack of players but are hopeful they will be able to form again in the future.

Kirby Cane Quoits Team (Lorna Neale)

"Great Suffolk game. Every village had its quoits club and everybody played. You had to pitch the quoits 18 yards into a clay bed. We each had our own and we treasured them. They're heavy things 71/2 lbs a pair but you didn't have to be strong to throw them well. The art was the letting them go." words quoted from Jubal Merton, wheelwright and blacksmith, in Akenfield by Ronald Blythe.
